Since this is Older Americans Month, I looked into the Older American Act (OAA) and found the many functions of the OAA very interesting. I thought I would share a few key points with you. What I found disturbing was the OAA has unfortunately lost ground reaching those in need of services.

Older Americans Month has been celebrated each May since 1963 when then President Kennedy proclaimed it as “Senior Citizens Month,” - a time set aside to celebrate those Americans who are age 65 and older. The Administration on Aging, part of the Administration for Community Living, has announced this year’s theme: Age Out Loud. This theme’s intention is to give the senior population a voice to express what they have to say about aging in today’s society.

Each year, the president signs a proclamation to make May "Older Americans Month." The theme for 2016 is "Blaze a Trail," which is exactly what our older Americans have done for each of us. President John F. Kennedy signed the first proclamation in 1963 declaring May as Senior Citizens Month which is now known as Older Americans Month. It was designed around the idea to learn more about the needs and concerns of older adults.
