As you think about the gifts you want to give your elderly loved ones this season, consider giving the gift of time. Instead of spending hours at the mall shopping for just the right present, why not use that time as a gift and spend it with someone who would enjoy spending time with you?
In our “always on the go” culture, the perfect gift is that simple. Your time is the most valuable and precious gift you can give.
Call ahead and set a time when you can drop in for a cup of coffee or hot cocoa. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or on the exact day of the holiday. If nothing else, just reminisce about the good old days. Senior citizens often do not have the means to socialize and may be lonely. Afraid you will have nothing to talk about? Then take a game, a deck of cards, a puzzle, or a family photo album. Many might enjoy getting out of their environment for a little while to attend a grandchild’s school or church program.
The human relationships that we build are far more valuable than the material gifts you give. The holidays really are the time to celebrate with family and friends and enjoy your time with them. You too will be blessed. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. So instead of placing a bow on a package, place it over your heart and step in the door.
